Torcross sits at the southern end of Slapton Sands, a narrow strip of land nestled between the stunning Start Bay and the tranquil freshwater lake of Slapton Ley Nature Reserve. Surrounded by breathtaking scenery, this charming village is home to fantastic cafés and pubs, making it the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon watching—or taking part in—watersports and fishing along the vast shingle beach.
Though today Torcross is a peaceful fishing village at the edge of a two-mile beach, it holds a fascinating past. During World War II, it was evacuated along with neighboring villages to accommodate 15,000 Allied troops who used the area for D-Day landing rehearsals. Tragically, the operation, known as Exercise Tiger, ended in disaster, and the memorial at the edge of the ley honors the 800 American soldiers who lost their lives in the bay.
A short coastal walk from Torcross to Beesands offers spectacular views, with remnants of the area’s military history and slate quarrying past along the way. Beesands is also home to the renowned seafood shack Britannia @ The Beach and the popular pub, The Cricket Inn.
For those eager to explore further, continuing along the rugged coastline leads to Hallsands and the lighthouse, while a short drive in either direction offers access to beautiful beaches—Blackpool Sands to the west, and the more secluded Lannacombe, Mattiscombe, and Gara Rock to the east.
Just twenty minutes away, East Portlemouth’s golden sandy beaches provide a gateway to Salcombe via a charming passenger ferry across the estuary, where visitors can enjoy boutique shopping, sailing, and fantastic pubs and restaurants. The nearby towns of Dartmouth and Kingsbridge are also within easy reach, while the village’s closest neighbor, Slapton, boasts two excellent pubs.
